2023: Three Important Questions to Ask Yourself About the New Year

As the new year approaches, it’s natural to think about your goals and resolutions for the next 12 months.

But sometimes, all of the planning and goal-setting can feel overwhelming and lead you to question whether you’re on the right track.

To help focus your efforts and make the most of 2023, it’s essential to ask yourself a few key questions:

1) How do I want to feel this year?

While your goals and resolutions are often centered around tasks and achievements, it’s important to remember that they are ultimately driven by the feelings you hope to experience as a result.

Whether it’s more freedom, abundance, fun, love, recognition, or safety, identifying the feeling you most want to experience in the new year can help motivate you to achieve your goals.

Knowing the feeling you want to experience is important for a few reasons.

First, it can help you clarify the motivation behind your goal and ensure that it aligns with your values and long-term goals. If you know how you want to feel, you can use that insight as a guide to help you make decisions and take actions that are in line with that feeling.

Second, knowing the feeling you want to experience can also help you stay motivated and focused on your goal, even when you encounter challenges or setbacks. When you have a clear sense of how you want to feel, you can use this as a source of inspiration and remind yourself of why you are pursuing the goal in the first place.

Finally, focusing on the feeling you want to experience can also help you cultivate a growth mindset, which is the belief that you can improve and learn new things through effort and practice.

2) How am I going to get back on track when I encounter challenges?

No matter how well you plan, there will inevitably be challenges and setbacks that arise throughout the year. Rather than allowing these hurdles to discourage you, it’s important to have a plan to overcome those challenges and get back on track.

In some cases, you may have to pivot and make a significant change in direction, approach, or strategy in order to achieve your goal. This might involve altering the way you are working towards the goal, the resources you are using, or the goals themselves.

Pivoting can be a useful way to adapt to changing circumstances or to course-correct when you are not making the progress you had hoped for. Pivoting requires flexibility and the willingness to try new things, as well as the ability to assess the situation and make informed decisions about how to move forward.

3) What word sums up the quality I most want to focus on this year?

While it’s natural to set specific goals and resolutions, it can also be helpful to focus on a broader quality or characteristic that you want to cultivate in the new year. This might be a quality that you want to improve upon or something that you feel is lacking in your life.

A “word of the year” is a single word you choose to focus on and use as a guiding principle or theme for the year ahead. This word can be used to help you set goals, make decisions, and stay focused on what is most important to you.

Here are some examples:

  • Courage: If you choose this word, you might set goals that involve taking risks, trying new things, or standing up for what you believe in.
  • Gratitude: You might set goals that involve finding ways to express appreciation and thankfulness, or to cultivate a more positive outlook.
  • Balance: You might set goals that involve finding ways to create harmony and balance in different areas of your life, such as work, relationships, and personal growth.
  • Adventure: You might set goals that involve trying new things, stepping outside your comfort zone, or exploring new places.
  • Creativity: You might set goals that involve finding ways to express yourself creatively, or to explore new creative interests.

The important thing is to choose a word that resonates with you and that you feel motivated to focus on throughout the year.

Asking yourself these three important questions about the new year can help you stay focused, motivated, and on track, as you work toward achieving your goals.

By prioritizing your feelings, being prepared for challenges, and focusing on your personal growth, you can make the most of 2023 and create positive change in your life.
