Here’s a short excerpt from The Passion Principles: 101 Ways to Express Your Creativity and Share It With the World …
12) Embrace the gap
Ira Glass, host of the public radio show This American Life, once talked about the frustration creative people feel in the early years of pursuing a craft.
They are inspired to do art because they have a sense of “taste.” But at first their technical skills don’t allow them to create at the high level they envision.
He referred to this disparity as “the gap.” Every creative person experiences it.
Many people give up during this difficult stage.
The solution, according to Glass:
“Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline … Because it’s only by going through a volume of work that you are going to catch up and close that gap.”
